Malcolm is a Chartered Scientist (CSci), Chartered Chemist (CChem), Member of Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC) and member of the UK Emergency Planning Society. He has a Master of Philosophy degree in explosives safety.

He started work as a Laboratory Assistant in a rocket motor ordnance factory and then moved onto diagnostic radioactive pharmaceuticals. In 1980 he returned to defence specialising in explosives safety at AWE Aldermaston and then to ammunition production. In 1992 after completing a research degree he ventured into emergency planning with local government and Dept of Health (Health Protection Agency). He has been a regular speaker at the Emergency Planning College, Easingwold on the effects of hazardous chemicals.

His varied career has led him to specialise in explosives safety, radioactive materials, hazardous chemicals, safety auditing, project management and emergency planning. He was a Civil Defence Scientific Adviser in the 1980s and has been a member of the British Red Cross for over 45 years. His main pastime is model railways (including big ones!) and enjoys Irish and Scottish music.

In 2005 he joined Serco Assurance as a Principal Consultant at Harwell where his current work includes emergency plans for Chernobyl facilities in the Ukraine.
