Rosanna Briggs is the Deputy County Emergency Planning Officer with Essex County Council in the UK. Essex is a county with a population of over 1.6 million people and has a coastline over 500 kilometres.
Rosanna has been involved in civil protection for a number of years and specialises in public information and media relations. She has been invited to present at a number of national and international conferences as well as at the UK’s Emergency Planning College. She has made a number of training films on a variety of topics including oil pollution, maritime disasters and more recently on the new Civil Contingencies Act which came into force in England and Wales on the 1 April 2005.
An essential part of the work she has been involved in has been to engage school children into emergency planning and she has developed a training package to enable schools to do this. She is currently working on a new film looking at the humanitarian aspects of a disaster and this will involve working with the response agencies, those affected by a disaster and the media. In November 2004, she was awarded her Masters degree.
